The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) is an international organization of over 1,300 of the world's foremost cardiothoracic surgeons representing 36 countries. Founded in 1917, its members have a proven record of distinction within the specialty, and have made significant contributions to the care and treatment of patients with cardiothoracic disease throughout the world. The AATS and its Graham Foundation (GF) strive to achieve the AATS mission of Promoting Scholarship, Innovation, and Leadership in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery while holding to the AATS core values of Leadership, Scholarship, Mentoring, Excellence in Patient Care, Integrity and Professionalism.
The AATS is looking for an experienced Education and Compliance Manager to manage all accreditation functions for the Association, and serve as the liaison to Joint Providers, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and/or other accrediting organizations pertaining to the AATS Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development (CME/CPD) program. The position will be responsible for identifying, collecting, and compiling necessary documentation for all AATS educational activities to ensure compliance with the ACCME and/or other accrediting organizations. This individual will also be responsible for the planning and implementation of all educational activities, both non-CME and certified CME, and will assist in developing education program goals and strategies for the Association.
The position will work closely with the Director of Meetings and appropriate members of the Meetings Department, as well as physician volunteers and members of the AATS leadership.
This is a newly created role. After many years of outsourcing to an association management company, the AATS is currently self-managed, and is now building its own dedicated team of professionals to provide previously centralized services. Key among these new team members will be the Education and Compliance Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
-Work with Association’s Education Committee, to assist in developing proposals for new education activities. Research and provide recommendations on faculty, learning format and audience.
-Develop and implement effective policies and procedures to manage the Association’s education program, which is comprised of stand-alone courses, live demonstrations (hands-on), workshops at the Annual Meeting, and other education activities.
-Responsible for maintaining
education activity files, as assigned, in compliance with ACCME Accreditation
Criteria, Standards for Commercial Support, and Policies and in compliance with
AATS policies and procedures. Maintain
knowledge of and ensure compliance with all requirements put forth by the ACCME
and by the American Medical Association (AMA) for accredited providers of CME. Prepare
reports for submission to the ACCME as needed.
-Planning all education activities, which includes executing and implementing the approved content development schedule, creating and executing all evaluations pertaining to each activity, as well as compiling data to be used in future planning.
-Summarize evaluation results and create outcome reports; present results to internal team members, as well as Course Directors and Program Committee members for consideration in future programming.
-Provide support to the Meetings Department during the planning process. Provide onsite support at the Annual Meeting and stand-alone activities as requested.
-Maintain physicians’ transcripts for accurate tracking of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
-Facilitate and manage all needs related to the Association’s co-sponsorship of selected education activities with other organizations.
Professional Experience and Qualifications/Key Attributes
The successful candidate must have at least five years of high-level experience in a similar role, and must be able to demonstrate his/her ability to work with colleagues across a broad range of other disciplines to deliver great results.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Direct experience and knowledge of ACCME Accreditation Criteria, Standards for Commercial Support, and Policies, as well as AMA requirements for providers of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
- Thoroughness, and attention to detail
- Organizational skills and an ability to adhere to firm deadlines
- An ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of others, including conference organizers, designers, freelancers, colleagues at the AATS, and, of course, surgeons.
- Travel required.
- Meeting planning experience is a plus.
