ALA is seeking a Director, Conference Services Operations who can visualize and plan continuously updated content delivery (both formal and peer-to-peer) for a diverse audience and coordinate/manage the internal/external resources necessary to deliver a high-value product
The mission of ALA Conference Services is to provide professional services and well-planned events of value to ALA's members, exhibitors and staff while returning financial and long-term growth.
Reporting to the ALA Executive Director, the Director, Conference Service Operations
is responsible for:
Ø Providing day-to-day oversight/supervision for the ALA Conference Services group, (5 direct reports and 1 indirect report)
Ø Coordination of content planning for the ALA Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting, including coordination with various ALA units and external providers
Ø Effectively managing the finances relating to annual and mid-winter conferences
Ø Developing innovative programs and learning/engagement activities
Ø Conducting ongoing assessment of programs and conference effectiveness in engaging members and other attendees
Ø Participating in planning/developing overall ALA professional development programs and member engagement programs, working with colleagues across the Association
Ø Monitor content needs within the profession and changes in the environment, to keep conference programs relevant to attendees
Ø Researching, inspecting, evaluating negotiating and recommending future ALA conference sites; negotiate and execute contracts with hotels and convention centers (along with, but not limited to visitor bureaus, catering, function space, audio/technology, conference speakers, and other general services) participating in future conferences.
Ø Staff liaison to the ALA Conference Committee and related subgroups
Ø Working with Conference Services Director (contracted position) to build innovative and expansive conferences for ALA, and to support membership and the association.
There is approximately 20% travel for this position, both regionally and nationally.

The American Library Association (ALA) holds its Annual Conference each June, which is attended by more than 20,000 librarians, educators, writers, publishers, friends of libraries, trustees and special guests. The conference includes more than 2,000 meetings, discussion groups, programs on various topics effecting libraries and librarians as well as tours and special events. Topics include libraries and technology, censorship and literacy. Approximately 900 exhibiting companies feature the latest in books, videos, computers and other materials vital to today's libraries and librarians. ALA units display professional exhibits highlighting the various aspects of the profession.
Starting Salary: Negotiable from $100,000 based on experience. ALA offers a comprehensive and valuable benefits package that includes generous paid vacation and retirement annuity.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in hospitality, event management, business, communications, marketing or related field required; Graduate degree preferred
Ø Certified Meeting Professional Certification highly desired.
Ø Minimum 15 years overall experience
Ø Minimum 5 years supervisory experience
